Radon Risks
The Hidden Danger in Homes and Buildings
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms in soil and rock. It moves upward through the ground and can enter homes and buildings through cracks in foundations, sump pits, crawl spaces, and other openings. Because radon is colorless and odorless, many people are exposed without realizing it.
About Radon and the Risk
Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Since uranium is radioactive and present in varying amounts across the region, radon can affect buildings of any age, style, or construction type.
Most exposure happens where people spend the most time: at home, at work, and at school. The good news is that reducing radon levels is straightforward with a properly designed mitigation system, and installation is typically noninvasive.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designates Iowa as a Zone 1 area, meaning the potential for elevated radon levels is among the highest in the country. Radon can vary widely from one building to the next, even between neighboring properties.
Why Radon Is a Serious Health Risk
Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels is a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and a major risk factor for smokers. Radon-related lung cancer claims thousands of lives each year in the United States.
Iowa is known for higher radon potential, which means many homes and buildings may be affected without any obvious signs.
What happens over time with exposure?
Lung Cancer Risk
Radon gas breaks down into radioactive particles. When inhaled, those particles can settle in the lungs and damage tissue over time. Everyone’s risk can vary based on exposure level, duration, and other factors, but the hazard increases the longer exposure continues.
The encouraging part is that a radon mitigation system can significantly reduce radon levels and help lower long-term risk.
Where can I buy my radon test kit?
You can order test kits online here from a certified radon lab. The tests themselves are a relatively quick and simple process to give you an accurate reading. The Enviromental Protection Agency reccomends re-testing the home every two years to ensure radon levels are low regardless if you have a system in your home or not.
